3 Tips to Maintain a Safe Workshop

Safety is paramount in any workplace, industrial or non-industrial. It is especially crucial for workshops, which involve a great deal of manual labour and heavy lifting, as well as sharp power tools and dangerous machinery.

The workshop needs to be a safe place at all times. Given the nature of work and presence of potentially dangerous equipment, workers must take extra care in minimising the risk of injury and accident.

At AMCO, we are familiar with the strain and fatigue that industrial workers experience on a daily basis. We care about your needs, and our aim has always been to provide solutions to make the workplace a safe place for everyone. By following these safety tips, you can ensure the safety and wellbeing of your colleagues and employees.

1. Store your tools in the right place

Workshops often become messy and cluttered. Swarf and shavings litter the floor, and tools are left lying around in the wrong places. These are the perfect conditions for someone to get injured.

Because many workshop tools are highly dangerous, they require extra care. Store them in the appropriate containers or storage facilities to keep them out of harm’s way. Make sure they are within reach. While wall panels and shelves have their benefits, they should be positioned at the right height. Otherwise, reaching for the tools puts workers in a precarious position or potentially contributes to the development of back injuries.

2. Invest in quality anti-fatigue and swarf mats

Anti-fatigue mats are a great help when it comes to industrial work. These mats cushion the weight to reduce fatigue, while protecting from trips and slips. Slips often happen because of dust and debris left over from machining processes.

Certain varieties, such as swarf mats, protect industrial workers from swarf. They are created specifically for workshop environments. They are sturdy and robust, capable of withstanding sharp swarf bits, debris, and wood shavings. They will hold even if they come into contact with sharp tools.

3. Keep safety goggles and hearing protection equipment on hand

Workshop work almost always results in debris or residue flying around, along with loud noises. Even processes that seem harmless can result in eye damage if workers are not equipped with the appropriate gear. For example, a stray grinding disk on a low-power rotary tool can shatter and send shards into the eye.

It is always important to put on safety equipment when performing cutting or carving processes. All these extra steps may seem cumbersome, but they’re far better than a trip to the emergency room.

4. Use cable protectors

Cluttered electrical wires can cause serious harm. They are a major fire hazard and can potentially expose workers to live electricity. On the non-fatal side, they can trip workers and tangle up equipment.

Use cable ramps or cable protectors to keep wires untangled. They provide a safe surface to stand on and protect from slipping or falling.
